Batting for Epilepsy

Jonty for Epilepsy SA
Epilepsy South Africa welcomed 200 guests, amongst others cricket hero Jonty Rhodes, to its 3rd annual Wine Auction on 25 June 2009, to raise funds for the non-profit organisation and to celebrate the French theme, L’Espirit du Vin, at The Bay Hotel in Camps Bay, Cape Town.

A bit of wine tasting from the line up of generous wine sponsors chased away the winter blues before the official wine auction got underway at 7pm. A fun simulated take off and landing in France got everyone in a frenchy mood, while starters were served, before Daniele Pascal enchanted the audience with her "chansons Francaise". Soli Philander and Jonty Rhodes had the audience in hysterics while they bantered with each other and handed out the lucky draw prizes.

The 18 generous cellars who sponsored the auction lots were involved and in attandance to support Epilespy SA and take part in the festivities. Blaauwklippen, one of the oldest working wine farms in South Africa situated in Stellenbosch, was the main wine sponsor for the evening and their 2006 Cabriolet 1, 5l fetched R700. Blaauwklippen said it was a priviledge to support the worth cause and to create awareness that many epilepsy sufferers live full and happy lives.

The entertaining highlights were of course the bid that got Jonty Rhodes to lose his shirt. Jonty explained that he is a person with Epilepsy and although he knows and manages his limitations in this regard, he has been able to achieve success in many areas of his life, particularly as a sportsman and South African cricketer. Jonty autographed the lot from Lourensford wine estate, a Shiraz/Viognier 6l, which sold for a staggering R2500.

A "Moment of Silence" from the interesting brand "Blank Bottle" went for R750. CEO, winemaker, and founder of this one-man-show, Pieter Walser, says a range of BLANKBottle wines have been listed by Woolworths and should be on the shelves soon at selected stores.

Epilepsy SA was successful in raising R75,340 from the generous guests and patrons that thoroughly enjoyed the evening out in support of a very good cause.
