fifteen + 1 2011
A 2011 Western Cape blend of Shiraz, Grenache, Carignan, Mourvedre, Grenache blanc, Rousanne, Clairette, Chenin, Viognier, Pinot noir, Chardonnay, Cinsaut, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet franc, Merlot and Pinotage. The StoryThe wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape in Southern Rhone, France, are made from predominantly Grenache blended with other red and white wines. I decided to try a blend of red wine and whites, so in June 2011 I made a blend of red wines from the Swartland including Shiraz, Grenache, Carignan and Mourvedre. After many trial blends I decided to blend some white wines and we blended bits of Grenache blanc, Rousanne, Clairette, Chenin, Viognier, Pinot noir and Chardonnay. The wine went back to barrel and 6 months later I was at it again and 6 months later again. And so the blending process continued. Bits of this and bits of that. Finally, purely on taste, I added some Cinsaut, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet franc, Merlot and Pinotage and ended up with 16 components in the wine. So you could say that this is a journey of my palate in 18 months. I will never be able to repeat this wine. It is fabulous and a once-off. Enjoy it!
