Moment of Silence 2016
So the 2016 vintage of Moment of Silence is a blend of 4 old bush vine Chenin blanc vineyards, some Grenache blanc and a touch of Viognier. I think a step up and a step in the right direction. The StoryWith the 2016 vintage, we took this Wellington white blend to the next level. Previously it was a blend of Chenin blanc, Chardonnay and Viognier. The Chardonnay was from a little farm called Twyfeling in the Bovlei, owned by my direct family 7 generations ago. This I only discovered after releasing the 2010 Moment of Silence (our 3rd vintage)!
Even though Chardonnay is not particularly suited for a warm climate, I kept on using it as a bit of history was connected to it. As time went by and we grew in volume, we started experimenting with more vineyards. In this time, we started using grapes from a 60-year old Chenin blanc vineyard called Spogblok, also on Twyfeling. Seeing that I now had grapes from Twyfeling, I could replace the Chardonnay. An opportunity arose to take grapes from a nearby Grenache blanc bush vine vineyard. So the 2016 vintage of Moment of Silence is a blend of 4 old bush vine Chenin blanc vineyards, some Grenache blanc and a touch of Viognier. I think a step up and a step in the right direction.
