The Spaniard 2007 was predominantly Mourvedre but in the BIG Spaniard 2009 I used predominantly Carignan. By doing this, I'm keeping the wine in the same style but adding colour and perfume. The Mourvedre adds oemph and the Cinsaut and Grenache, elegance (not even mentioning the fact that this is a different vintage and therefore a different wine...)
The vineyards used in this wine are situated in the warmer parts of South Africa - the Swartland and Wellington. With decomposed granitic soil towards the Swartland and clay soil in Wellington, each component contributes in its own unique way to the final blend. Overall the Big Spaniard 2009 is a little bit bigger than the Spaniard 2007 and I personally believe that this wine is in a league of its own.
The Story:
The Spaniard 2007 sold out in November 2010 and proved to be BLANKbottle's most popular wine thus far. After many requests for a repeat Spaniard, I'm happy to be able to finally release a worthy successor - The BIG Spaniard 2009. A BIG wine for a BIG winter to come!
The life cycle of a BLANKbottle wine normally goes as follows: If a wine is well received, I repeat the wine for a few vintages until I am satisfied with the quality. The wine will then graduate from the BLANKbottle range and the batch name will become the brand (like in the case of the Moment of Silence). I then endeavour to repeat the wine every year.
This is the last year you'll be able to buy The Spaniard under the BLANKbottle range. The BIG SPANIARD 2009 (as the name implies, a slightly bigger version of The Spaniard 2007) is an awesome wine. As with The Spaniard 2007, The BIG Spaniard 2009 is a blend of Mourvedre, Carignan, Grenache and Cinsaut. The Spaniard 2007 was predominantly Mourvedre but the BIG Spaniard 2009 is driven by Carignan which gives it it's colour and perfume. The Mourvedre adds oemph and the Cinsaut and Grenache, elegance.
